Check out these lawn mower service tips!
Winter just won’t go away in Illinois. The temperatures are down, Christmas has come and gone, and we’ve even seen some snow. Don’t let that fool you, though. Spring is just around the corner. If you’re an avid landscaper who takes lawn care seriously, you’ll know what that means. It’s almost time to bring your mowing, edging, and weed-eating lawn maintenance tools out of winterization. Whether you’ve done this a million times before or this is your first spring with a lawn, here are a few lawn mower service tips for firing it up this Spring!
1. Change your oil
While other problems will have symptoms you can diagnose, old oil won’t. It’s a silent engine killer. As part of regular lawn mower service, be sure to change your oil every spring before mowing. Additionally, you should check your oil level every five hours of use and change it every 100 hours.
2. Replace your air filter
A clogged air filter prevents your mower from running correctly. Make sure you check it and replace it if necessary. Read the manufacturer’s recommendation for the make and model you will need. Remember that if you live in a dustier climate, you will need to change it more often.
3. Dump your old gasoline
Gas gets old over time and will cause your engine problems. Be sure to dump leftover gas and replace it with fresh. Always use straight gasoline, never mixed with oil or oil made with ethanol.
4. Check and replace spark plugs
To save yourself a headache, pull out your spark plugs and check that they are still good. If not, replace them.
5. Check your battery
If you have an electric start engine, you’ll also have a battery. Use a volt meter to check the voltage on your battery. If it’s low, charge it. If it won’t charge, it’s time for a new one.
6. Sharpen your blades
Check the manufacturer’s recommendation for sharpening and replacement instructions.
7. Check your tire pressure
Fill if necessary!
